Success in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) isn’t just about building an exceptional robot—it’s also about having a strong, adaptable game strategy. A well-thought-out strategy can mean the difference between an average season and a championship run. This blog introduces a step-by-step approach to developing a winning game strategy, emphasizing alliance considerations and match planning.


Step 1: Understand the Game Rules and Objectives

The foundation of any strategy is a thorough understanding of the season’s game manual. Teams should:

  • Analyze the game field layout and scoring zones.

  • Identify key scoring opportunities and high-point activities.

  • Note penalties or restrictions to avoid unnecessary point losses.

By understanding the rules, teams can design strategies that maximize scoring while staying compliant.


Step 2: Assess Team Capabilities

Every team has unique strengths and weaknesses, so it’s crucial to evaluate the robot’s functionality, driver skill levels, and the reliability of autonomous modes. Aligning your strategy with what your team can realistically achieve ensures you are playing to your strengths and minimizing risks. Scouting other teams is critical to anticipating challenges and forming alliances. During competitions:

While aiming for maximum points, always account for potential risks:

  • Avoid strategies that leave your robot prone to penalties.

  • Prepare backup plans in case of malfunctions or unexpected challenges.

  • Practice recovery scenarios, like quickly realigning your robot or switching to alternate scoring strategies.


Step 6: Post-Match Analysis

After each match, a detailed analysis allows teams to refine their strategies. Reflecting on successes and areas for improvement provides valuable insights, helping teams adapt and improve their performance in subsequent matches. This iterative process is a cornerstone of effective competition preparation.
